How do I handle an awkward work place social situation?

Asked By: Anonymous
Got a new job where I unfortunately have to sit with the 2 IT guys that work there. They are incredibly rude and annoying. I have done everything that normal people would respond to in order to be polite and friendly, but it doesn't work with them. Instead, they insult me, and talk about and do inappropriate things on a constant basis. I've only been there for 2 days at my new job, yet I have been the one to initiate all greetings and departures. When I do great, one of them sneers at me, and the other tries to think of some witty, sarcastic thing to say. They are constantly talking to eachother all day about very "inside" things (technical jargon, interests), nerd videos they watch on youtube, video games, emailing eachother jokes and then laughing and talking about them, and other weird techy stuff...so, as a person who doesn't know these people and who doesn't know how to handle this kind of conversation, I haven't been able to be quite as friendly and randomly relate and interject comments. Then today, one of them comes up to me and asks me why I never talk to them, and says I can't rely on the other one (the one who sneers) to start a conversation, because he's "too shy." Apparently this dude who works there is allowed to be too shy to be polite, but I am not given the consideration of becoming acclimated to a new work environment, especially with people I would never otherwise talk to. Obviously, the loud one thinks he's incredibly hilarious and will not say one straightforward thing to you--everything is incredibly sarcastic and insulting. I even tried to make conversation today throughout the day, and every reply I got from him was snotty. They look at pictures of women in bikinis online, play pacman, watch you tube videos, and all of that stuff, until they get a tech call. I'm trying to make a good impression, trying to earn myself a permanent position after my temp time is up, so I don't really have the desire to go home and watch Pokemon or whatever in order to converse on their level. The thing is, if I didn't work with these guys, and if I wasn't new, it wouldn't bother me, but I don't want them to run around saying I'm a snob who won't talk to them or is bitchy or something. Other people have commented that the tech guys are very lazy and annoying, but of course, being new, I want to fit in and not look like a socially selective *****. What can I do? I'm stuck in the cubicle with them for the next few months...

my coworker admits to showering once a week. how do we tell her this is not acceptable in a business??

Asked By: MJB
We deal with customers on a regular basis, though not in a retail kind of fashion. Its a small office, there are only 8 of us, so its hard for any of us to explain to her that this kind of hygiene is not acceptable in a place of business. she's young, and pregnant, which doesn't make the smell any better. Help! we don't know what to do!

Had a HUGE potluck at work yesterday, come in this morning, e-mail about leftover hot dogs at 10 a.m.!?

Asked By: Reserved
These people don't stop - huge company, and all they do is e-mail mass messages about food and potlucks and ordering out. The amount of time they spend doing this each week probably adds up to a full day of lost work. Who else here would be disgusted about leftover hotdogs at 10 a.m.?

Question for Native Americans?

Asked By: CleoCATra
I live in Arizona and there are numerous Native American Indian tribes here. While at a full service restaurant that we frequent, the waiter, who has worked there for over two years, told us that Native Americans don't tip. That they leave absolutely nothing. He has never gotten a tip from them nor have any of the other servers. Is this part of the Native American culture not to tip for service in restaurants? If so why? Just curious. Had never heard this before and found it interesting.
