You speak of "retrieving" data so I'm assuming it worked at one point.
Have you checked the device driver?
cl Start
cl Settings
cl Control Panel
cl System
cl Hardware
cl Device Driver
R-cl on the item to be checked. Click Properties.
That will tell you if the item is working properly.
To update the driver:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardward, Device Driver
click the icon for the item you want
click the “update driver” button on the toolbar.

Yes! First check the compatibility of the memory stick on your device not just by physical but also the capacity. And try if you can still see the file on the card for ex. a camera that you used it for then go to www.lc-tech.com they have this program called rescue pro... But before you do that double check the card if its really not accessible by any computer, check if the card reader is compatible with your card's capacity.

there could be something wrong with your memory stick. but dont worry, sony is offering a free service to recover data that has been lost/removed from your memory stick, just head on to the official sony website, or type in 'sony memory stick data rescue' on the search engine,

Hi!
Insert the ms into another computer. Copy the data to a disk.
Win 98 usually doesn't like ms's.
Good luck.
