Go to your local library and try to find the A&P study books for powerplants, or if you feel like blowing a few bucks you can probably get them on line. Jeppeson makes a full line of aviation material for the course to become a maintenace person, but these books have history and basic operating theory (beyond suck, squeeze, bang and blow) for all types of engines you'll find on any aircraft.
