Can you go to jail for refusing to provide identification?

let's say cops pulls you over or stops you on the street and asks you for i.d. for whatever reason. If you don't have it on you and refuse to give officer your name/address, etc. can the officer arrest you? If so, would you stay in jail untill you provided them with that info? Also, if you're in jail and never give out that information how can they find out and can they keep you in there without filling paper work since you didn't provide them with your i.d. and other personal information?

You are required to give your name and address and to provide an ID if asked by a police officer. You can be arrested for lying to them too. You would be held in comtempt of court if you were to continue to refuse to answer the questions. They will simply list you as prison # anyway they dont really need a name.

Yes, in some cases they will take you to the local police and to a background check on you, just in case you aren't on parole or a fugitive from justice, or to see if you could possibly have some back traffic violations that have gone unpaid. If you don't like that, EVERY AMERICAN should be aware that on the back-burner in Congress there is a Bill to create a National Identification Card. This will also have your fingerprint on it! Eventually you will need this to do any transactions involving the feds. If you don't believe me, please check with your Congressperson or Senator!!! Big Brother is getting to fat, and needs to go on a diet....(That is the US Government)

Yes, to all your questions. You need to provide the identification they are asking for. They have no idea if you are a fugitive, a wanted man, a sex offender, a felon. Why would you NOT provide this information if you have nothing to hide.

I think they can hold you and a court can order you to provide ID. If you still don't then it's contempt of Court.

You can be held until you are properly identified...Don't worry about the paper work....everything will be answered with "Unknown". Then they put you in with your cellmate "Bubba" You will be giving up your name and address soon after.
