why does my home stereo receiver make winding noise when turned on?

your speakers might not be shielded from electrical interference coming from sources like tv, computer monitor, etc. Try to put them a little farther from these sources. This also happens when you have loose audio connectors, try using a new set of connectors.

If you have a disk in the DVD or CD player when you power it on, you may be hearing to unit automatically spin the disk upon power up? Or it may be a grounding problem and are getting some sort of ground loop hum........Try using a heavy duty extension cord ( like you would use for a power tool) and try powering your system from another power plug else where in the house. Other than that....I don't know.
