First of all you should always have your puppy on a leash when you take him out to potty. Take him where you want him to potty just stand still and give him time to go. If he goes praise him a lot say good potty, or what ever you want to say. Then give him another 5 min. to finish. Then you could reward him with a little romp in the neighbors yard. If he doesn't go bring him back into the house on leash and put him in his crate or tether him to you and take him out again after 5-10min. on leash to spot and repeat.

First, take your puppy outdoors on a leash and allow the pup to first potty. Then you can take the dog off leash or put the dog on an in-ground tether to play. See my website for more potty training tips: www.thepetteacher.com Yes, obedience training will help with teaching you how to communicate with the pup ... and will teach the pup how to respond to your requests. You can then use what both of you have learned to teach the dog how to stay close to you rather than bolting away.

Yes. Start training right away. The sooner, the more well behaved your dog will be when he/she is older.
