When to (ahem) "nip" the boy kitty?
Another cat question - I know. My male kitten is about 10 weeks and is as sweet as can be, but he already makes the "spraying" motion, even though he isn't mature. When should I get him fixed? I would hate for him to stink up the house even once if I can help it.

A lot of vets will say wait until about six months, but it's becoming more common for early spay/neuter so you should contact your vet and check their policy on it. It's also better to get it done earlier because the healing process isn't as long.

Many shelters and humane societies are advocating early - at 2-3 months - spay/neuter. My male got the old snip-snip at 5 months, when I noticed that the litterbox was starting to have a stronger smell. The best thing to do is call your vet or humane society (sometimes they do a low-cost spay/neuter clinic) and ask. Some vets are not comfortable with performing the procedure so early, but many on board with it, so it's kind of just a matter of finding a vet in your area who will do it, soon.

nip? do you mean castration? If he starts spraying you house with urine you know you have waited to long. Best way to "nip" them is stuff the tom cat head first into an old cowboy boot while someone holds the back legs with welders gloves on. You can get a powder to stop the bleeding at a large animal vet store.

Although my vet will not spay/neuter before 4 months, I picked up one kitten from a rescue at 10 weeks old that was already spayed. The woman at the rescue said her vet will spay/neuter as young as 8 weeks and has never had a problem with it.
Ask your vet what his policies are and you may be able to go ahead with it before this behavior becomes a problem.

Try between the age of four months of age or six months before he hits sexual maturity. Are you sure that he is actually attempting to spray?

as soon as possible. We did it as soon as 12 weeks. Just be sure the vet has good gas anesthesia, or wait till 6 months. The anesthesia is the risk.
