Should we get a Doberman?

My family is planning on getting a male Doberman puppy. The thing is, we already have a Cavlier King Charles Spaniel (female). I'm a bit concerned since i don't know much about this breed of dog and don't want to put my Cavalier in danger.

First of all let me tell you that this Laura on here obviously knows nothing about Dobermans!!! If people are NOT knowledgeable of a certain breed they should simply move on to another question!!! Dobermans brains do not out grow their skulls. Nothing but a myth & pure stupidity!!!! Since you are getting a male pup they dogs living together should be just fine.My Dobies are between 65 & 100 lbs I rescued a female mutt that weighs about 25-30 lbs, less than 1 year old & at first I was a little concerned since our home belonged to my Dobie kids for years before getting the mutt. I have now had the rescue in or home for almost three years & the Dobies simply loves her. As a matter of fact my female dobie cleans her ears & thinks she is her mother. My male Dobie loves to play with her & she too loves the attention she gets from them. Dobermans are not really a good dog for the novice owner so please do a lot of research on the breed. Here is a couple sites on Dobermans http://www.dpca.org/ & http://largedogbreedz.com/large-dog-breeds/doberman-pinscher/ &http://www.breederretriever.com/dog-breeds/134/doberman-pinscher.php Here is a couple sites to prove Laura has no idea about this magnificent breed http://www.thedoberman.com/myths.shtml & http://www.hope4dobe.org/myths.htm

I have a 6 yr old male Doberman along with two Cavalier King Charles puppies, ages 12 wks and 4 1/2 mos. He is great with them. I know he doesn't like them running and jumping on him, but that is because he is an older dog not because he is a Doberman. He tolerates them anyway! And you know how Cavaliers are....they think everyone is a friend. He also gets along with my cats. Since you are obtaining a puppy / Doberman and already have the Cavalier, it won't be an issue. Dobermans that grow up and are used to other animals have no issues getting along with them. As you know puppies love everyone! The Dobie I have now I obtained when I already had a Cocker Spaniel who was 11 at the time. I just put her to sleep over the winter at 17, and a nine yr old female Doberman. The Cocker Spaniel was the more dominent one and would put my Doberman in his place.....even when she was 17. They get along well with animals if the grow up with other animals. Do not hesitate it won't be a problem.....at all.

I had the same concerns as you and have had my female doberman for 4 months now. My concern was i have a 4 yr old 3 POUND yorkshire terrier (male neutered) I was scared to death that the doberman would accidentally swallow the yorkie, lol. actually just the opposite. Although dobermans tend to "use there hands" alot. ie, she tries to push, smack the yorkie, she would never do her "big brother" harm. The yorkie is a little crabby so they don't really play with each other and she learned quickly that they are not playmates. She definetely stays out of his way. The cat is his pal and they wrestle. It's scary to see my cats head completely inside the dobermans mouth, until i realized how extremely gentle she is with him. I am so pleased with the wonderful temperment that these dogs have. My doberman would do anything for our family and protects all of us from the dangers out the front door "mailman, etc" including the cat. if she senses any danger she comes to make sure where everyone of us are and stares us in the eyes before checking on the next. Shes also a wonderful playmate with the kids and swims with them, jumps on the trampoline etc. She's like another kid. Get a doberman and treat it well, socialize it, and get her some basic obedience training and you will be as happy as i am with her.

I am rolling on the floor here at Laura's comments. It appears that superstitions about small heads and brain pressure in a Doberman still exist -- or ignorance abounds. I have had 5 Dobermans share my life. I believe they are a great breed of dog, but honestly, if you know little about the breed I would venture to say this is NOT the dog for you. Doberman Pinschers are a gentle, loyal, loving, and highly intelligent breed. A well-bred and properly socialized Doberman is an excellent pet and companion, suitable for families with other dog breeds, excellent with young children, and even cats. However due to its intelligence, the Dobe takes special training and care to ensure their natural instincts are used properly and positively. These are not dogs to be purchased on a whim. Too many end up in shelters or rescues because humans purchase them and then realize they bought more dog than they can handle or bargained for.

Do your research on the web to find out more about this breed or any breed. Make sure the doberman comes from a reputable breeder so you know that it's parents have stable temperments and no genetic health issues. All breeds have some type of health issues. Many can be prevented by good breeding. The puppy might be to boistorous at times, so you will have to monitor their playing together for a while. If one of them isn't neutered, you will have problems when the female comes in heat. Actually, both dogs should be neutered.

I just had to laugh at Laura's comment. Are you serious? Don't listen to her. Dobermans do not just 'go crazy' and snap. LOLOLLosadjen wow. EVERY single Doberman (young AND old) I've ever met has wanted to lick me to death. Dobermans need a FIRM owner. So make sure you're ready. Obedience training would be great and help the pup know who is boss. Reprimand the puppy in a firm "NO" when he nibbles at your fingers and toes. NO physical reprimanding. He will love your Cavalier! Make sure to supervise ALL playtime to make sure nothing gets out of hand. Most big dogs think they are Chi's in size. Here is some more info on them: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/doberman.htm http://www.hope4dobe.org/beforeyoubuythatpuppy.htm (favorite site!) With proper training and obedience your Dobe will be the perfect dog!

First, ignore Laura E's ridiculous advice. She is obviously uneducated. http://www.larissaione.com/doggie/archived.html http://www.hope4dobe.org/myths.htm http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/myths/myths.html Dobes are great dogs for the right owners. They're very intelligent, big goofs, not the monsters some people want to make them out to be. Be sure to do your research if you get one from a breeder and ensure they breed dogs for temperament and test their dogs for hereditary problems; there are also great dogs available in rescue. A Doberman and a Cavalier Spaniel can be great companions, providing they are not unattended (you can crate them separately when you leave the house). Even unintentionally, a Dobe can unintentionally harm her in a bout of rough play.

Doberman are great dogs though most people get them to guard the house as they are very good guard dogs they are alright with other dogs but prefer to be the one and only they need to be exercised regularly but other than that they are awsome. I believe your dog can be anything you want him/her to be you just have to let it know the rules and what/not it can get away with. hope that helps ;)

yes. Our Doberman is so sweet and playful. She would never hurt anyone. Although she appears fierce, she rarely barks and is even afraid of some other dogs. She is a big baby. Although, I do not know about males...

I would think that it would be a great idea dobermans are great dogs...but you HAVE to be devoted to training it, some of them tend to get aggressive if they are not propperly socialized...and make sure that the girl dog is spayed!!!!! otherwise EXECELLENT IDEA!!
