Computer keeps showing blue screen of death when turning on?

My friend accidentally hit the button on the power surge thing and it shut off the computer. Now when we turn it on it pops up blue screen of death and when putting in xp cd and trying to repair or reformat it says the hard drive is not found so what should we do for this?

1st, check the bios to see if the hard drive is being seen there. If not, do not worry about windows yet... Reseat cables, and try redetecting HD in the bios. Possible that the HD or controller got fried also, if reseating cables does not work, try moving the HD to the secondary IDE controller, or another SATA controller, depending on the type of HD you have..

BSOD caused by power failure / turn off? Rare and unlikely. IF the HDD is not found you should not get the BSOD because the BSOD is an OS error. Something else is going on. Check the BIOS and see if it sees the HDD. If not, you have a controller or HDD issue. If the HDD is detected, you probably need to repair it - NOT reformat it. You can download plenty of free boot discs with repair utilities. Search the web for BOOT CD Image . Check http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Reseat cables, and try redetecting HD in the bios. Run the system recovery process to recover the files that pops up blue screen of death. http://www.computerfreetips.com/System_Tune-Up/w_repair_tune.html

There are number of things that you can do. 01. Remove the HDD from the computer and attach it to any other computer and copy your data (very safe). 02. Run Windows recovery setup, if its succeeded, you won't lose your data if its messed up by any IO error, you are done. Good Luck !!!!

damaged windows installation. You need to try to do a repair, and if that doesn't work, reinstall Windows. if you have to reinstall windows you will lose everything on your hard drive. you should try and back it up first by putting the disk in another pc as a slave or in a usb caddy.

I'd suggest reinstalling windows which, contrary to other answers, will not format your hard drive.
