I am retired from the military service (Army) but I was in before the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy was signed in back in 1993.
Many LGBT people are serving their country but keeping quiet about the sexual orientation.

Yes in the Air Force from 1981 to 1985. It was a good experience and was tough at times and boring but full of adventure and camederie. I found it to be actualy very gay and lesbian, just closeted. I reccomend the military to any youth who is looking for a future and some worldy experience and has no other options. But it is not for everybody so the decision to sign up should be well thought out.

I'm not Gay but I have Gay friends in the military. It is a don't ask don't tell in the military.

I served the USAF for 10 years - 6 openly.
My husband retired after 30 years - NOT OPEN.
Here is my only advice - do a good job keep your private life private and you will be fine!

my girlfriend is in the coast guard.....when she puts on that uniform i just want to jump her!
she loves it. she was out at sea for awhile (before i knew her) but now she works out of an office. it's tough tho with the don't ask don't tell - she feels isolated a lot b/c she can't discuss with the other people. however, we are hoping that changes with a new president!!!!

my girlfriend is in the marines and she loves it. she said that out of her whole platoon 5 girls are lesbian. the only hard thing is, theres no benifits for us military lesbian girlfriends. it is dont ask dont tell but the girls also dont hide it in there she said.
