You should start with a favorite color or a theme. Keep in mind paint colors look different when there is a whole wall reflecting against the color. Also consider the light you have in the room. If you have alot of afternoon sun a dark color will feel hot. As to style. Do you like a clean look( modern) ? Is storage an issue? Do you need a loft with a desk underneath? They have books of decorated rooms at the bookstore you can browse through to get some ideas.
