How do you give credit to sources from irregular places?

I'm writing a research paper and I got some of my information from the nutrition facts on the back of cereal boxes and things like that. I have to give credit within my paper and in a bibliography and I'm a little lost. All help is appreciated.

Interesting question! The link below will direct you to the online writing lab, through perdue university. It doesnt have exaclty what you are looking for (the cereal box) but I suppose if you include the brand, the manufacturer, the date it was produced, that should be sufficient. Or, see if you can find a photo of that label on the internet (perhaps the cereals'c web site) and cite the photo as you would any other electronic source. the website below, if you look around a bit, will show you how to cite just about anything (look at the links on the bottom of the page).

Google the manufacturer of the cereal to find out whether they have any nutritutional data on their website. They often promote the value of their products if they're anywhere on the scale above hazardous. If so, cite that. If not, look for comparison tests from USDA, FDA, or other creidble sources. If not, cite the box itself, truthfully, but in langugae that doesn't sound like "cereal box" such as : General Mills XXX Product Nutritional Analysis. Use the "sell by" or some other date on the package to date the citation. I hope you have other info as well. If not, back to the supermarket and look at more boxes.

I've never seen cereal boxes cited like books, articles, etc. As long as you say where your information is from in the body of your paper, I think it would be fine. For example, this online article looks at cereal boxes, but does not cite them in a bibliography: http://www.americanpopularculture.com/journal/articles/fall_2004/kadish.htm
