Your body must have fuel to maintain normal bodily functions. Pumping blood, breathing....etc. Think of it like a car in park. It's still running, still using fuel. You can't turn your body off, it's always running. Counting calories is USELESS.
1 gram protein = 4 cal
1 gram carbohydrate = 4 cal
1 gram fat = 9 cal
4 basic nutrients : protein, carbs, fat and WATER
Eat three balanced meals a day. BALANCE these nutirents and add the micro nutrients. Vitamins and minerals in vegetables. These nutrients and micro nutrients fuel the body and enable proper balance to sustain bodily functions. Fourth grade health.

Most of the calories you eat are used to maintain bodily function - every cell is constantly using energy to carry out it's function, such as protein synthesis, molecule exchange etc.
There are always neurons firing, your heart is always beating, lungs always breathing (& associated muscles working), brain is always working (even when asleep), and a lot of energy is used by the digestive tract, which is always working 24/7 even if you haven't eaten for a while.
These are just a few examples - the body is always busy with stuff we don't even notice (unless it goes wrong!), and this uses a surprising amount of energy.

calories burned from running = 10??????
that sounds like a single quick sprint to me!
Regards how your body uses so many calories while at rest: Just remember it takes energy:
Just to think
to digest food
to breath
to pump blood around your body
to keep your body temperature within normal bounds
Everything your body does requires energy!

Be a newborn yet back! while eating out, order a newborn’s sandwich, pizza or burger. then you've the treats you cherish, whilst lowering your parts and lowering your calorie intake.
