Nothing is effective except the name brand monthly topical liquids like Frontline and Advantage - nothing. Garlic is dangerous, can cause blood diseases in dogs, Dawn can burn the dog's throat and intestines if some gets down him, as I said, nothing works, dogs have always had fleas until the topical liquids were invented. Washing your dog often will dry out his skin and coat - bad idea. Your most economical option would be to get Frontline - that can be used on dogs and cats - in the large size and split it by weight between your dogs and cats - that's what I do, I have multiple dogs and use Advantix (that keeps fleas and ticks off but CANNOT be used on cats). Advantix can be used on cats as well, Advantix cannot. This is one case where you don't want to try to be cheap - get the largest size Frontline and carefully divide it by your dogs and cats weights.

Nothing as effective as the stuff you get from the vet. Perhaps you could get yourself one of those big spray bottles of Frontline. They cost about $60 at my vets, you might find it cheaper on line or call around to different pet supply stores in your area. Depending on the size and number of your animals that may last you an entire year! That's pretty cheap for an effective way to keep fleas and ticks out of your home and off of your family.

I know that putting alittle bit of garlic in the dogs food, it wil help keep the fleas away. I also heard that if you bathe your cat or dog in a citrus dish soap it will help kill the fleas also. Just do it carefully and not a lot of soap. Good luck and hopefully that helps.
