We call ourselves, Anishinaabe (Chippewa/Ojibwa) The Anishinaabeg Nation was divided by the US-Canada border. The Anishinaabeg live in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Native American and American Indian are in common use by the governments and in text books. We never use those terms. In my community, Indian is rarely used except in a joke or similar situation. If I am speaking to someone of another culture I would use "Native" with those who don't understand Anishinaabe. In the USA "reservations" are called "tribes". In Canada "reserves" are called "bands". We refer to ourselves as "Nations". In Canada the term "First Nations" has been adopted to refer to "bands" and has been accepted by the Canadian government. The term First Nations is gradually being adopted in the US. Basically we know who we are, but we are never allowed to claim it. If you do a search on the Internet “Anishinaabe” is the universal term used by my people. .

Most like to be called by their names :-) The ones I know are perfectly comfortable being called "Indians." One in particular that I know considers "Native American" or "First Nations" to be "white guilt." You'll often see them refer to themselves as "NDN" in chat.

I don't know but I have never heard one of them refer to their "Nation" as a "tribe". Maybe some do, but I have never heard it.
