help me with this 2 english sentence?

Choose the correct sentence.For 1 Point(s) Answer: A) Neither the lettuce nor the peas were fresh. B) Neither the peas nor the lettuce were fresh. which one is true? and why?

the first one the were has to go with peas bc it's plural if you say neither than the verb agrees with the noun that's closest to it

Both are correct because lettuce is already plural, it doesnt matter in this case. Neither the peas nor the lettuce was fresh, doesnt make any sense because lettuce isn't singular.

A is correct because the verb "were" takes the conjugation for the plural "peas." Lettuce is singular, you can't say "lettuce were" When you have a neither/nor, you have to conjugate with the second subject.

I have to go contrarian, here. I think both may be technically incorrect, though they sound better to the ear. The subject of the sentence is 'neither', not the lettuce and the peas. Neither is singular, so it should read "Neither......WAS fresh."
