The Russians tried to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. John Kennedy, the President, told them to get them out of there or get incinerated. The Russians backed down, and nobody died. It was pretty scary for a few weeks. The world was very close to a nuclear World War.

For those of you who stop by here I thought you might like to know Russian war ships are in the western hemisphere for the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Don't let the religious zealotry on this video distract you from the real news stories used. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irWgFL5hucE

October of 1963 I think It is interesting to read about. Kennedy played his bluff against Russia and Krustchev. It is probably the closest we ever came to a nuclear war. The missile sites weree spotted by U 2 planes and it ended when The US stopped a convoy of Russian ships heading in to Cuba and they turned around without conflict. This is a real simple answer but there are lots of articles and books on this subject. I live in Florida and I remember doing daily drills in school hiding under our desk in case we heard the civil defense sirene go off. I was only in 5th grade but I remember thinking . . .hmmmmm will this desk protect me against an atom bomb
