My friend and I are planning a trip to NYC. We're driving, and we want to stay outside of the city - Where?

We are driving, and want to stay outside of the city - for two reasons. 1. So we aren't paying outrageous fees to park the car AND 2. Cheaper hotels Where should we stay? We want it to be a 30 min or less train ride into the city, but also in a good location - since we're girls. Nothing shady. Or if you know of any affordable hotels in the city, and cheap parking - that would be even better! Thanks!

Well, if you stay in Newark you may as well stay in the City. I'd suggest Westchester County. This is considered the beginning of "upstate" and you can easily catch train into City. Be careful about coming home late at night though.
