A lame duck is an elected official about to be replaced. It covers the time from when the election results are in until that person takes office. George W. Bush is currently a "lame duck" because Obama does not get sworn in until January 2009

In American politics The term lame duck inertly means a President with limited powers, usually a direct result of the 2 term policy. When a President is re-elected, focus is projected to the new candidates for the Presidency. Alternately, a President can be a lame duck if they lack a majority in Congress. Without a majority in Congress of his or her own party, any bills can be blocked since they require over 50% consensus in Congress. An example of this is Clinton in his first term, Republicans had control and continued to block his Medicare bills. The only President never to have been a "lame duck" is Roosevelt who won 4 elections.

All Modern day Republicans . .lol No, but that is mostly true. They are the elected officials who are not returning to government jobs next session of congress or the presidency, since they lost their elections or are retiring. They will be replaced in January along with The President. They are the ones not returning, so they have limited powers, like a duck that Dick Cheney shot but only wounded and now the duck is lame, it is soon to become in political terms a "dead duck" Which for all intent and pourposes are most Republicans alive today . .another term for them "stick a fork into them they are done" This cycle most republicans will be out and replaced by Democrats.

an elected official who is approaching the end of his tenure, and especially an official whose successor has already been elected. The status can be due to * having lost a re-election bid * choosing not to seek another term at the expiration of the current term * a term limit which keeps the official from running for that particular office again * the abolishment of the office, which must nonetheless be served out until the end of the officials term.[1] Lame duck officials tend to have less political power, as other elected officials are less inclined to cooperate with them. However, lame ducks are also in the peculiar position of not facing the consequences of their actions in a subsequent election, giving them greater freedom to issue unpopular decisions or appointments.

It is an out-going elected official who is close to retiring his or her position. In the case of George Bush, for instance, he is believed to have little influence over anyone or anything simply because he is almost "out" of office. Therefore, he is referred to as a lame duck.

It's the end to a term of office, just before another elected official takes over. A lot of times the elected officials that are on their way out will make new rules or changes at the last minute, while they still can.
