Sharp pain in upper back?

I have an on and off sharp pain on the upper part of my back. It's on the left side, right by my shoulder area, close to my lower neck. I've had it for about 3 years maybe, but I'm only 16 years old. Sometimes it's so sharp and sudden I yelp in pain. What could it be?

I've gotten that in my hips and it's just all of a sudden when I'm not even doing anything. I too have wondered what it is but just to let you know, you are not alone.

I have had this problem and have been told a number of things. Number one; Your not getting enough exercise. If you don't use a muscle, it will eventually shrink until it is taught (probably misspelled) and cause sudden pain Number Two; You may have something stuck. One doctor once told me my so-and-so nerve went UNDER the so-and-so vein, causing pain. Another tells me It is a pinched nerve. Another tells me to go to a accupunturist. I dont know if this helps, but My suggestion is to go ask YOUR doctor. Mine are never all that good, but listen to what he says carefully and then bring up the details and do some research online. Hope I've helped! =D
