Why shouldn't the government make working overtime illegal? ?

My debate topic is "There should be a legally mandated ceiling on working hours" and I am on the opposition.

The answer is rather straight forward and simple. The government can't enforce the number of hours you work unless they have been stipulated in a legally binding contract with your employer. Can you imagine how society would be affected if doctor's, nurses, police, power line workers, sewer workers, road workers, and other people who deal with emergencies were restricted in the number of hours they can work? France already has such a law. They did it to spread available jobs to more people. Their economy is a socialist wreck.

Overtime is good for workers, and it's a choice. Where I work were always short staffed, so the cooks get to work overtime a lot. Making overtime illegal would basically shut down my IHOP on Saturday and Sunday, then the government can deal with an entire morning of old people that miss their pancakes, lol. Since it's a choice, and it's more money for the worker, I don't see any way that a law like this could help anyone. If the employee doesn't want to work the extra hours, then they don't have to. If the employer is willing to pay overtime, then he is more than likely benefiting also.

If overtime was made generally illegal (except for emergencies) then there would be more jobs. So there would be more work for more people. Those that work too many long hours get stressed and short tempered. Those that have no work get stressed and short tempered . If we even things up - more people will be happy. Psychological tests have shown that people are not at their best when they work long hours. It's like doing too many hours in the gym, you get tired - your performance decreases. Same with work. Companies are not getting good value from employees working long hours. Higher cost and less output. That effects the performance of the company - their profits go down because they are not getting the best value. A company could employ 100 workers doing 65 hours a week each but with deteriorating performance Or 162 workers doing 40 hours at maximum performance. .

Legend in your own mind!
It shouldn't be illegal. I have worked many, many overtime hours. If you work on salary there is no overtime rule. You work as many hours as your employer says. If you're self employed then only you say how many hours you work. The government should only get involved if it's excessive and forced. I've worked jobs where OT is mandatory for so many weeks or months. Some were up to 18 hours a day plus Saturdays and every other Sunday. it put a lot of money in my pocket, but uncle scam got most of it.

No, I don't think there should be. As long as people are not being made to work more hours (beyond contracted hours) than they are willing to, then I don't see the problem.

I like working overtime. I like my work. It's my choice and I don't want a law telling me that I can't.

Gov't has no business interfeering with work. Further, the States did not authorize the fed to do that.

Why, I make my best money on overtime, and it's not mandatory.
