Hi, I assume you talkin about wireless router. For configuring wireless router you usually connect router and laptop with a network cable. Once you setup the settings in router. You can take of Network cable. Suppose your computer doesnt have wifi card , you can connect through network cable to back port of Router ( if your router has any free ports).
Suppose you talking abt normal switch which is used to connect multiple computers, then problem could be your Network adapter in your computer porbably might be disabled. Try to go to [ control panel - network connections ] and check if the Network adapter is enabled. If its disabled right click it and enable it. and try again. It should be ok then.
