What is vocational education?

Does this mean instead of taking classes and obtaining a degree, you are thrown into the job and learn the trade as you go?

Basically you go to a specific school (vocational schools, such as cosmotology schools or mechanic schools) to learn about one trade and one trade only, other than regular education where you have to take classes for every subject.

Not necessarily. It means training for a particular job rather than an academic education. So going to a school to learn to be a welder or an auto mechanic is a vocational education. Going to school to get a BA in History or a BSc in Biology is an academic education.
