why is the abbreviation for pound Lb?

my 11 year old nephew asked and i did not have an answer for him. Is there a book out there to look these things up?

Here you go... all I did was go to GOOGLE, type in lb and got a Wiki hit.

yes its called google. The origin is in the Latin word libra, which could mean both balance scales (hence the symbol for the astrological sign Libra, which was named after a constellation that was thought to resemble scales) and also a pound weight, for which the full expression was libra pondo, the second word being the origin of our pound. so Lb is actually an abbreviation for Libra

It comes from the Latin "libra" (scale). I found this on wikipedia (see link) but I bet any good dictionary would have it too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_(Avoirdupois)
