THOSE WHO ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE IN GRAMMAR, pleasee help:?

In the following sentence: In order to gain property and influence over economic policy in the Bahamas, Woods had bought himself a knighthood and became a member of the cabinet. Is it correct to say "became a member" or "become a member"? Thanks! 10 pts best answer
