You refer to the floating magnetic toy.
There are 6 electromagnets in the base in a circle.
The electromagnets keep the top floating as long as it spins fast at the right height.
The top also has some permanent magnets in it.
I have seen an early patent about it on the net, so you could look there for it.
The patent diagrams should show the electromagnet orientation.

there kinda is no photo, but i would assume you put the floating toy on some water, and then place a magnet on the top of this, it basically creates a makeshift compass as the floating magnets southern magnetic field will be attracted the magnetic north of the earths magnetic field, this means it will spin and you can tell what direction you are facing at certain places
