Getting my first tattoo really soon..kinda nervous. Any help or suggestions?

I'm getting my first tattoo really soon..and I'm wondering what I should expect and how badly it's going to hurt. I don't want to look like a pansy if I cry or anything..lol. I'm getting it on the back of my left shoulder. Please don't leave the cliche "Dont get a tattoo" remark. >.> I've heard that way too many times already. I'd like an actual answer or two. Tips would be nice. :] Thanks! xoxo

Don't worry! I promise you have nothing to worry about. I'm a total wimp and I just got my first tattoo on my ankle. It didn't hurt nearly as bad as I had expected. I had it built up in my head that it was going to be horrible. But it wasn't. It just felt like I was being scratched or something. My tattoo artist described it as the way you feel when you cut yourself shaving and you get that soapy sting. It's really just more annoying and irritating than anything else. As for tips, don't go on an empty stomach. I was so nervous I couldn't really eat a full meal, so I just had some applesauce and nibbled on a granola bar right before going. You could take a tylenol or something right before going in. I also had a friend with me so that she could carry on a conversation and keep my mind on something besides the pain. And make sure you follow the aftercare instructions so it heals properly. Hope I helped!

Tattoos do hurt, but it's more like a mixture of pain and pleasure. Your brain releases a certain chemical called endophins which explains the pleasure part of it. Getting tattoos can be quite addictive as well for this purpose. Try not to be nervous, just relax and enjoy it all. Start with something very simple and small at first. Hope this helps.

You'll be totally fine. Make sure you eat about half an hour beforehand, and you might want to have a drink with you and maybe something to munch on in case you get lightheaded in the middle of it. What I usually do is go to Subway on the way to the shop and get a good sandwich in my stomach, then get a big coke and some cookies to take with me to the shop in case I need it. I've never needed the cookies, but better safe than sorry, you know? Don't worry about the pain too much, it's going to hurt some, but it's best not to think about it too much. As long as you keep breathing, you'll be fine. I've had my ribs tattooed and the key is just to keep breathing and focus on something on the wall or talk to your tattoo artist. It's really not too bad, and if you're talking to someone or distracted in some other way, it'll be over before you know it. Afterwards, be sure to follow the tattoo artist's instructions. Don't leave your bandage on for too long, and when you take it off you should wash it gently straight away to get all the blood and gunk off of it. Your tattoo is gonna be pretty gross for a while, they always are. Don't freak out, and never ever pick at it. Just put whatever ointment or lotion your tattoo artist recommends (I use bacitracin ointment for the first few days, then I switch to unscented Lubriderm and it works great for me, but your skin might need something else) on as often as they say to. When it starts to itch, which it's going to no matter what you do, you need to just try not to think about it and keep lotion on it. If it gets really bad, it works really well for me to scratch the skin around it or to pat my tattoo. You'll be fine, and you're gonna want more afterwards, I promise. The adrenaline rush is great. Don't get up too fast when it's done, or you might get a wicked headrush, I've done that before! Good luck!

It's going to burn a bit...that's how it felt for me. Just make sure you get a lot of rest the night before. Make sure you have everything there at home to take care of it when you get home. Eat a decent meal before you go. Bring a buddy to talk to while getting the tattoo or just talk to your artist. And I'd bring a drink along with you...a coke or pepsi....something like that. Don't be nervous and don't worry about it. Good Luck :)

i have a rather large one there. ask if they have numbing gell.couse if you dont use it, it hurts like a B*tch!!! dont belive ankle girl. ankles are the least sensitive part or your body to get tattooed. expecialy if it goes over your sholder were your bra strap goes and tword your spine. Dont worrie about looking like a panzy for crying. I am a tom boy and i cryed like a baby, twice and my boyfriend was there so dont feel bad. plus they are used to seeing people cry. YOU WILL NOT BE THE FIRST PERSON TO CRY DURING A TATTOO!! =]

when i got my first tattoo i was nervous. I'm the type to get really nervous and all that fun stuff :-P anyways...my bf came in with me when i had it done and during the whole time he talked to me. Him talking to me made me think of what i was gonna reply back to him instead of thinking about getting the tattoo. So trust me it does work!

How much it is going to hurt depends on your level of pain tolerence. I love the way it feels to get a tattoo. My 6'6" ex football playing hubby is brought to tears by the pain they bring him. It also depends where on your body you get it. Different areas are more sensitive. If you want one get one. My best advice, eat before you go, know exactly what you want, and don't go in believing it is going to hurt.
